How to interact with the pupils is probably the issue that worries the majority of beginning teachers. Some can’t control the class. You hear them complaining that they can’t work properly due to the intense noise coming from the room. Others rule the class by fear. They prefer to give punishment rather than rewards. Some seem to be trendy to the point that all the kids love them. They really care about the kids and know all their problems.
Teachers are professional and hardworking individuals who don’t fit any of these stereotypes. What counts the most is that the teacher should know how to deal with pupils properly. The relationship with the pupils is the most important thing to work on for any teacher.
Try these tips that might help you on your teaching:
1. Be fair, but firm. Be consistent with praise and punishment. Do not be seen to have favorites.
2. Be organized. Ensure that when you arrive at each lesson you know what you are teaching because pupils want to feel that they are getting a good deal.
3. Do not terrorize. Carefully chosen words of praise are more effective than a confrontational screaming match.
As a classroom teacher, you must above all be fair, in control and easily approachable. Children are great imitators and they want teachers to be smart professionals. They want to be taught by someone they trust. It takes for us teachers to earn their trust and for them to earn our respect.
