Presenting learning materials to children with special needs require more careful effort to be effective. Here are some strategies you can use:
- 1.Adjust expectations based on students needs.
- 2.Break tasks or assignments into sections. Make them shorter.
- 3.Provide alternative assignments instead of long written assignments.
- 4.Show a model of end product.
- 5.Give written and verbal direction with visuals if possible.
- 6.Break extensive assignments into small sequential steps. Monitor each step.
- 7.Emphasize to capture student attention to main points within the written direction of the assignment..
- 8.Make sure that all homework tasks are written correctly in some kind of a homework book. Sign it and have parents sign it too.
- 9.Number and order steps in an assignment.
- 10.Give outlines, study guides, and copies of overhead notes.
- 11.Make sure to clarify learning expectations to the student before starting a lesson.
- 12.Ascertain you have the students’ attention before starting a lesson.
- 13.Let students use tape recorders, computers, calculators and dictation to obtain and retain assignment success, if applicable.
- 14.Permit oral administration of test.
- 15.Limit the number of concepts presented at a time.
- 16.Offer incentives for beginning and completing material.
To assess, test, and grade your students, you can follow the guidelines below:
- 1.Have a quiet setting for test taking. Tests should be written if necessary and allow for oral responses.
- 2.Excuse student from district wide testing if possible.
- 3.Segregate test into small parts.
- 4.Grade spelling independently from content.
- 5.Permit as much time as needed to finish.
- 6.It is crucial to avoid time test.
- 7.Modify percentage of work needed for passing grade.
- 8.Allow retaking the test.
- 9.Allow monitored breaks from test.
Alterations in presenting learning materials and assessing students will really need special provisions. Be careful in your modifications to ensure learning success.
