“Too often we underestimate the power of touch, a smile, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” Pondering upon these lines of LEO Buscaglia, we will realize how caring and interacting people bring joy to other people, and this is a part of human relation skill. This is the ability to work effectively with people like supervisors, department heads, school principals, teachers, parents, students and other stakeholders. Skills in human relations develop the ability of understanding oneself and others as individuals., and as members of working groups. The knowledge and skills emphasized include maintaining an environment conducive to teaching and learning practicing appropriate teaching style, promoting interpersonal relations among co-workers, developing teamwork, free expression and better listening.
Relatively it involves manifesting confidence, trust, respect, interest and enthusiasm on the job, applying, coping skills and stress management; motivates people and influencing behavior, promotes smooth interpersonal relations among teachers and superiors.
Many leadership and management seminars stressed that what counts most in an organization is human relationships. Some lecturers even claimed that human relation skills should take the 70% of the pie, meaning, a leader must allocate the 70% of his time to this skill. Some leaders may disagree with this because their number one priority is position, authority or fame. Tapalla (1998), emphasized that if you delved deeper into life, you will discover that the stuff of life is more than fame, power, possessions and other trappings of modern life.
People are the most precious resources who make up the world and affect our daily existence. People must value people, so that security, happiness and peace will follow. There is a strife when human relationships is weak. There will be conflict and unhappiness when this aspect in an organization is not given an importance. As Charles Reade puts it, “ if you wish to please people you must begin understanding them.”
Human relationships in an organization is powerful. A real good relationships can soar to a greater heights, one never thought he could attain. Maxwell (2002) on human relationships:
- 1.Be rational. If you get along, others will get along.
- 2.Be enthusiastic. Your heart is the source of energy for the organization.
- 3.Be communicative. You have many voices but only one heart.
- 4.Be collaborative. Working together means winning together.
- 5.Be selfless. There is no “I” in the team, but we have “We”.
