I don’t consider as an Out-of-field Teaching

A few years ago, I claimed myself teaching areas of specialization in Music, Arts, Health and PE for Secondary schools; PE 1,2,3 and 4 and other major subjects in Physical Education. A few years ago, I claimed myself teaching areas of specialization in Music, Arts, Health and PE for Secondary schools; PE 1,2,3 and 4 and other major subjects in Physical Education. Here comes SY 2016-2017, my first year in the Senior High School.

Of course I am expecting to teach any subject in my field of specialization. Then, the teaching loads were posted and I saw my name to teach the subjects PE 1, Human Movement and Personal Development (PERDEV). At first I was confused. I said to myself, how am I going to teach Personal Development? What are the things I am going to teach here? Can I do this?

I was hesitant to teach it at first because I know to myself that I am not prepared. Also, I am afraid to fail. So, I took time to do some research. I downloaded the Teaching Guide and some references. I printed and read a few pages. I was amazed and got interested to it!

The PERDEV subject focuses on the student.  Students in the Grade 11 enter a new psychological and social level called the middle and late adolescence. The students taking this subject may look and analyze their developmental changes, skills and traits which may help them meet the various tasks in the future. It provides techniques to meet stress and other mental health issues with one’s strengths and coping powers. It gives students the chance to analyze their relationships with their family and friends. And, it may also help them in their career development.

When I read about the orientation of the subject, I got excited to prepare for my classes. Whenever we have class activities, it is just like having team building activities in church. I saw how the students enjoyed the topics and activities. I totally enjoyed teaching it too!

I have learned to love the subject as I teach it. I have learned to appreciate the subject because I saw impacts to the students. May it be a small or big impact to the students; I know it has touched them. I thought I could only teach only in my line of specialization.

Before the semester ended in November, I read from the Deped Order No. 3 s. of 2016 (Hiring of Senior High School Teaching Positions) it says that under Group V (Sports), the related subjects to be taught are Physical Education and Health, Personal Development and related specialized Sports Subjects. Thus, it is not out-of-field teaching at all.

If ever I would be assigned to teach the subject again, I would love to embrace it. And I am sure we will be making unforgettable sharing of experiences.
