Learning disabilities are a general term for a wide range of learning problems. Students with learning disabilities cannot be called lazy or dumb, it is just their brain is wired differently from other students. They have a unique learning style, so in order for them to learn, a teacher must use a technique that is suitable to their learning style.
Students with learning disability is as smart as the other students, they can be successful at school too. Provided that they will be given extra time and special teaching style. Learning disabilities or learning disorders include problems with reading, writing, and mathematics, listening, speaking and reasoning.
Identifying students with learning disability is not an easy task because there is no proof of the problem but there are warnings that researchers had listed in their studies that may help teachers and parents in solving the problem right away. These warnings include:
Ages 10-13 signs and symptoms of learning disabilities.
- Difficulty with reading (dyslexia)
- Letter and word recognition
- Understanding words and ideas
- Reading speed and fluency
- General vocabulary skills
- Difficulty with Math skills (dyscalculia)
- Trouble with open-ended test questions and word problems.
- Dislikes reading and writing; avoids reading aloud.
- Spells the same word differently in a single document.
- Poor organizational skills (bedroom, homework, desk is messy and disorganized).
- Trouble in following classroom discussions and expressing thoughts aloud.
- Poor handwriting
There are two types of reading disorder, first, the difficulty in understanding the relationship between sounds, letters and words and the second is the reading comprehension.
Signs of reading difficulty include the following:
Children with math disability has poor memorization and organization of numbers, they also have problem in counting principles and have difficulty in telling time.
Learning disabilities can be handled and treated properly if parents and teachers work
hand in hand. It is better to detect earlier to pave the way for your child’s full potential to learn.
