Teaching skills is a way of reflecting on the teacher’s work, on the learner’s role, on the teaching – learning dynamics, and a way, too of assessing the effects of teacher’s practices in the classroom. Since we are goal – oriented teachers we should focus on the output. Here are suggested seven steps in the teaching skills that can be very helpful on how the learners will change as a result of learning after instruction.

  • Specification of objectives. Choose objectives which are updated curriculum based, prerequisite to higher grade level, always described stated in terms of behavior and content, and pupils centered rather than content or teacher centered
  • Diagnose student’s abilities, interest, and needs, and set up objectives to meet such needs. This is an evaluation process conducted before instruction begins-that is before, teaching a new unit or developing a major skill.
  • Select appropriate materials suited to the needs and interests of the students.
  • Prepare the setting for learning and select appropriate teaching strategies to help students achieve goals.
  • Prepare instructional units, and write lesson plans. Organize information about the students, objectives, materials and techniques into a resource unit that can serve as reference, day by day.
  • Motivate the students to participate actively throughout the lesson presentation, guide learning process through an effective feedback mechanism.
  • Evaluate student’s performance through oral and written test.

The result will not only tell us how the students mastered the lesson but also how

effectively we had managed the lesson.
