Being an innovative social studies teacher is very important most especially now that we are facing the latest curriculum which is the K to 12 Program. In order to be innovative in teaching the subject, a teacher should consider the following:
Embrace the latest trends. A social studies teacher should ruminate on the latest means in making the class interactions be more lively and interesting. In doing such, the teacher should therefore embrace the latest trends in teaching being suggested by the experts in the field of education.
Make use of technology in teaching. The computer will in teaching the subject. By means of computer, the classroom discussions will be more interesting and lively. Furthermore, it will assist the teacher for easier and better teaching. The visual arts, power point presentations, graphics and videos from computer intensifies innovative teaching.
Be more resourceful. As a social studies teacher, you should not only confine yourself on textbooks and minimal materials instead look for better materials and search the world of internet in order to gather more valuable materials for learning.
Present more inactive activities. The classroom is not merely a classroom of conventional discussion as an alternative more vibrant activities should be included in order to motivate the child and stir his passion to learn.
Use collaboration. It is not solely the teacher’s mind but the innovative teaching of social studies makes use of collaboration among the learners themselves. They should pull their minds in order to come up with the best ideas in studying the subject.
Stage the child as the center of the teaching-learning process. The child is said to be the center of the teaching-learning process. In the more innovative way, the child should be a very active participant in the class and being given the privilege to grow more and eventually to progress.
Have parents’ involvement. The innovative teacher involves the stakeholders in the education of the learners. The parents in particular greatly have a big role in guiding the child to be more attentive in studying the subject. In addition, an innovative social studies teachers frequently informs the parents of the learners’ performances and progress.
