One of the components of Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) subject Is Garments
As defined in LovetoKnow Corp.(2018),it is the craft of sewing clothes and dresses. On the other hand, dressmaker is also referred as seamstress since it is related to sewing, garments and clothing. Dressmakers cut, sew, mend, and alter clothing. They deal with women’s clothing.
They deal with women’s clothing which includes dresses, blouses, suits, evening wear, wedding and bridesmaid’s gown and sports wear. Therefore, sewing skills are essential to pursue dressmaking careers, knowledge of human body shapes, clothing design skills, and knowledge of different fashions.
Clothing is an important part of human’s life and the society in general. They say that wearing the type of dress is an example of self-expression. Dressmakers and designers contribute to our country’s economy by having dressmaking as their career. At present, people choose their clothing depending on their taste and style, unlike the past years, wherein clothing is done to keep us warm and protection during extreme weathers.
In addition, dressmakers can be employed as freelance dressmaker or be employed by a fine clothier. A professional dressmaker may be employed in dressmaking shops, department stores, and garment factories. However, others can be self-employed.
In large shops, specific tasks are assign to each employee, for instance, measuring, pattern-making, cutting, fitting, stitching, or making the sleeves.
At present, the skills of dressmakers are still in demand in factories and dress shops. As long as fabrics are very much available and the demand for different dress stylescontinues, at the same time, they can cope up with the different fashion designs, then dressmakers will continue to be in demand.
It is with this context, that teachers should always enhance their expertise intransferring dressmaking skills to students as a way of helping them in preparing for a dressmaking career.
