A twelve-year program is found to be the best period for learning under basic education. It is also the recognized standard for students and professionals globally. However, the Philippines is the last country in Asia and one of only three countries in the world with a 10-year education before college.
That’s why the Department of Education implemented the K to 12 program, a new horizon to share to our students to let them maintain competitiveness wherever they go. K stands for Kindergarten and 12 refers to the succeeding 12 years of basic education; 6 years of elementary education, 4 years of junior high school and 2 years of senior high school. The transition has started in school year 2011-2012 and is still developing until now.
In spite of the DepEd intention to administer a learning with a world standard, many people are resistant to this radical change in our educational system. There are a lot of strong arguments against the K to 12 program. But we cannot ignore the fact that we have the intensive need to embrace this adjustment due to the reason thatsome employment opportunities demand applicants to have at least 12 years of primary and secondary schooling. Moreover, if we continue to refuse to improve our practice, we might one day become irrelevant and thus, miss the opportunity to compete with the fast changing world.
