Change it not easy, especially when it is about big understanding such as the implementation of the new k to 12 curriculum in the Philippines. The recent change in the Philippine educational system has started in 2011. The new k to 12 curriculum requires all Filipino students to have one year kindergarten, six years of elementary schooling ( grades 1 to 6 ), four years of junior high school ( grades 7 to 10 ), and two years of senior high school ( grades 11 to 12 ).
Prior to the implementation of k to 12 curriculum, Philippines was one of the three countries in the world and the only one in Asia that still had only 10 years of basic education. This has always been seen as a disadvantages for our students who are computing in an increasingly global job market. Education leaders found out that the 10 year education cycle is insufficient. Those who look for greener pasture, abroad are not recognized professionals. They still have to attend schooling and passed the board exams. Thus, changein curriculum is really needed.
K to 12 curriculum is designed to enable graduates to join the work force right after high school, and suitably prepare those who want to go on to higher education. The new curriculum will also support college graduates seeking work abroad. Our government is very optimistic that K to 12 graduates will acquire and posses skills relevant to the job market; there will be higher opportunity for gainful employment or becoming an entrepreneur, and that they will be better prepared for college.
The enhanced K to 12 curriculum is designed to provide a holistic education for all. It will give students ample time to master basic academic skills as well as to participate in co-curricular and community activities. The government also encourage parents to think of K to 12 curriculum not as having two extra years of high school but as two years less of higher education. Graduates of the new educational system will already be equipped to join the work force right away with the help of the electives to be offered during grades 11 to 12. The curriculum aims to improve the quality of our basic education system and our graduates. The beginning is always the hardest. We have started. We should keep moving forward.
