Amidst the issues surrounding the new curriculum K to 12, the government keeps its stand towards the said program. It is POSITIVE. K to 12 is a way towards a better and  higher quality of learning for Filipino children.

President Aquino, in his speech has stressed out the positive sides of K to 12. “Hindi pa man nakikita ngayon ang positibong epekto ng K to 12 pero alam ko darating ang araw na pasasalamatan tayo ng bagong henerasyon sa pagpapatupad ng K to 12.” Pres Aquino pointed out. He further added that K to 12 will allow children to be more globally competitive.

Many people are still ambivalent as to whether this curriculum may help learners or not and whether the Philippine government is ready for the implementation or not. On the other hand, Department of Education (DepEd) is consistent in its answer- Philippines is ready.

In an interview with Prof.  Winnie Monsod (in her show, Bawal ang Pasaway kay Mareng Winnie), DepEd Sec. Bro Armin Luistro expressed his optimism towards the said curriculum. He said that he is sure that learners benefit from this.

Meanwhile, in the seminars and trainings conducted (since 2012), K to 12 is described as “springboard”. It means it is from simple to complex. K to 12 also further stresses out the importance of using Mother Tongue. With  this, learners may able to express themselves more comfortably using their own dialects.

K to 12 also gives significance to Multiple Intelligence and not merely on academics. The inclusion of Music, Art, Physical Education and Health, (MAPEH) helps to hone other potentials of pupils. For the higher level, students are also being equipped with technical skills which they can be used for future employment purposes and also for business.

There’s a silver lining for K to 12…..we may not see its positive side for now but let us be optimistic. It will be a great legacy for our learners.
