Many question arose when the new curriculum, K to 12 was introduced. It gained the curiosity among the public. People became interested on what K to 12 is all about and what benefits it will give to learners.

K to 12 means Kinder and 12 years of basic education. This is a major since the previous Philippine education system is comprised only of ten (10) years. The Kinder was only optional. K to 12 Curriculum, however starts with Kinder. The elementary education is still comprised of 6 years. Then, learners will go to Grades 7-10.  Grades 11 and 12 are called Senior High School. During this stage, students will take subjects which can help them in the courses they will take in college. In some cases, they may choose not to take college but still land on some jobs, based on the subjects they took during Senior High School. Others may opt to resume obtaining College degrees.

Meanwhile, K to 12 is also described as Springboard. The curriculum starts from simple then may end to more complex skills. It also aims to hone pupils not just academically but HOLISTICALLY. This is one of the reasons why MAPEH (Music, Arts Physical Education and Health) was introduced as early as Grade One. This curriculum recognizes the concept of M.I. (multiple intelligences). The pupils may not be that good in academics but may perform well in other fields like Arts, Music, etc.

The curriculum also gives significance to the inclusion of Mother Tongue. This is the dialect that the pupil is accustomed with and is being widely and comfortably spoken by the pupils. In this way, they can learn better because they can speak well with their own dialect and without any hesitation.

K to 12 also gives the Filipino children opportunity to be globally competitive since it’s now included in the list of countries having 13 years of basic education. Previously, Philippines was the only country in Asia which has 10 years of basic education. With the previous curriculum, Filipino learners faced conflicts when they studied abroad. They were obliged go back to lower years since the school they enrolled do not recognize the 10 year basic education curriculum. Now, Philippines can boast that it has K to 12.

K to 12 is a fresh start, a jumpstart to better education. It is a springboard, allowing learners to expand their horizons and be the best that they can be and show it to the world.
