Teaching is a noble profession. Being able to see for yourself, students who become successful whom you once mentored is a priceless possession. Seeing them claim their goals and achieve their plans are probably the culmination of the teacher’s passion. One will never understand unless one will be courageous to step on the shoes of an educator, after all, a teacher affects learning, students may never know when the teacher’s influence stop.
However, at some point, like any other individual, even educators feel that the flame is getting weak; a spark is needed to reawaken the passion for the profession. Teachers are also human. If faced with challenges and factors that can put them at the brink of letting go of their profession, teachers need the push that they have given to their students.
How can we, teachers, regain the passion for the profession if we are nearing our saturation point?. Elena Aguilar, a Transformational Leadership Coach from Oaklahoma, USA, in her article “Why do I teach?” provides inspirational experiences on why teachers must hold on to their profession. According to her, teachers must bear in mind that teaching is the only way to see a substantial change in the world. That’s the bottom line: We need to change this world, and this is the way we choose to do it. Teaching allows us to work on hearts and minds, to guide people in becoming empowered, literate, engaged, creative, liberated human beings who want to join in this effort to change the world.
Let us believe in our students and their capabilities to become significant in their field of endeavour. Their achievements and victories are closely attached to their teachers because once in their lives they are nurtured by mothers who were not even related to them by blood.
Further, let us continue to teach because some of our colleagues have given up on it. When things become complicated, go back to basic. Remember the very core and the very reason why we pursue this profession – to preach and to teach. Our effect to our students goes way beyond our lifetime.
Lastly, keeping the passion for the profession entails sacrifice and determination. Once a teacher always a teacher. Our lesson plans contain not only specific theories and concepts, rather it contains lifelong lessons not even the four walls of the academe can teach. Just remember, we are created for greatness and to great students our definition will be complete.
