An epithet quotes, “ He’s a mile wide but only half an inch deep.” This quote aptly describes an individual who a little bit about aa lot of things but are not really specialist in anything”. Also, the saying “ Jack of all trades, master of none” can be categorized between a praise of an insult to a person.
The above-cited quotes may be applied to a school administrator who is trying to do everything but fails to be a specialist in anything. A school administrator must be specialist in one if not in all, he or she does of her management practices and skills. The school manager is always monitored, since everything he/she does affects everything else. The school managers are highly expected to prepare teachers and students in an increasingly accelerating world, the era of communication and technology revolutions.
One management skill that should be dealt on carefully and creatively by a school head is mentoring. His/Her significant goal is to achieve high level of achievement for all. He/She is expected to develop the teacher’s knowledge, skills and decision-making. The school head must establish an environment wherein the culture is characterized by a professional learning community. He/She must be oriented with the process of establishing specific, measurable ,achievable, realistic and time-targeted goals; therefore, his/ her methods, technics and strategies and processes utilized in managing the school, and the school community in terms of goal-setting, planning, organizing, leading and controlling must be established.
The goals that he/she will set in relation to the school and community must be specific, measurable and attainable, reliable and time-bound. (SMART). They must be compatible with the goals of the organization, since this will involve commitment and contributes to the attainment of goals.
The aspiring school head must put in mind that all of these cannot be done overnight. He/She must reinforce relationships. There should be an atmosphere of trust, integrity interdependence and commitment among the members of the school community, and it is the school administrator who should take the lead .
