Leadership is intrinsically tied to motivation. Leaders stand out from the crowd and normally do not need much assistance in the development of their leadership potential. There are many reasons why one follows a leader. Some may follow a leader because of fear. Autocratic leaders may seem bossy and dictatorial to some people and they are followed so that they won’t get mad to their staff.
People may also follow leader because that leader gives them hope or the leader inspires faith in a specific vision for the future. A leader may be followed because the followers agree with his basic intellectual positions on things such as political and religious views. In addition, a leader is seem to be a “born leader” and has strong of achievements behind him to prove it. This is a rational reason to follow such a person.
The charismatic leader is not necessarily one with proven track record, but he knows how to communicate ideas and inspires – to transform – people to follow. Charismatic leader are always the center of attention; they know how to hit one’s hot buttons and can easily articulate an appealing vision.
Leaders bring people through difficult times. Leadership is always valuable, but it is especially valuable when things are rough, and people are motivated more by fear than hope. A leader can take this fear and transform it into hope, faith and a vision for the future.
