The phrase “learning modalities” refers to all the different ways in which learners acquire, process, and demonstrate what they know. Learners use all three modalities to receive and learn new information and experiences. However, according to the VAK or modality theory, one or two of these receiving styles is normally dominant. This dominant style defines the best way for a person to learn new information by filtering what is to be learned. Handling small children in kindergarten class with different attitudes toward learning could be confusing dealing with, but learning these learning modalities will help significantly. The following are the three learning modalities.
Visual people
Visually dominant people may frequently say things like, “I see what you’re saying.” They tend to learn best by reading or watching. “Experience is processed through sight and visual images” (Markova,34). Some of the teaching methods that could integrate this style into learning.
- oUse graphs, charts, illustrations, or other visual aids.
- oUse IVM, power point presentation
Auditory learners
Auditory dominant people may frequently say, “I hear what your mean.” They may learn best through being told or by listening to a lecture. “Experience is processed through words and sounds” (Markova, 35)
- oInclude auditory activities, such as brainstorming, buzz groups,
- oUse a radio based materials in teaching
Kinesthetic learners
Kinesthetically dominant folks might frequently say, “It just feels right to me.” They take very seriously the cliché, “actions speak louder than words.” They may learn best by doing, rather than watching.
- oUse activities that get the learners up and moving.
- oPlay music, when appropriate, during activities.
- oExperimentation
