Many educators usually handle different students with different learning styles. With this, the teachers have the experience of not being able to reach some students until they provide different ways of teaching. Teaching using one approach will definitely leave some students behind. Sometimes, as the teachers exercise that single old method of teaching, those who use that learning style are often labeled as bright while those who don’t are labeled as unintelligentthat most likely strengthen the belief that there are really smart or empty-headed students.
These are supported by research from Hattie and Darling-Hammond stating that providing students with multiple ways to access content and demonstrate knowledge and skills improve and increase engagement and learning. They also provide teachers with more accurate understanding of students’ knowledge and skills. In addition, Tomlinson has said that instruction should be informed as much as possible by detailed knowledge about students’ specific strengths, needs and areas for growth.
Thus, teachers are encouraged to recognize the different learning styles of their students that have been categorized as: visual who prefer using pictures and images; aural who want using sound and music; verbal who like having words both in speech and writing; physical who choose using body, hands and sense of touch; logical who prefer using logic and reasoning; social who desire learning in groups;and solitary who wish working alone. Moreover, recognizing these learning styles of the students will help enhance the speed and quality of the learning.
