The unique DNA structure in each of us outlines a large part of who we are and what are our potentials. This is something that is inevitable. However, that might no longer be the instance. In November 2018, a Chinese research team led by He Jiankui, displayed a video on YouTube announcing to the world how they efficaciously altered the genetic factor of twin girls, in the end constructing them impervious to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Afterwards, the academics sheltered denunciation from the scientific community, researches and general public from transversely the sphere, as the focus is still highly arguable in terms of methodical and principled vantage point.

On a lighter note, this undertaking has flagged the way for potential treatment for many hereditary maladies such as Down Syndrome, Hemophilia, etc. as well as the mitigation of diseases which are currently deemed as incorrigible.

On the other hand, there would be many enticements. For example, the creation of designer babies. That is, designing babies genetically by choosing their eye color, augmenting IQ and all other genetic characteristics. It is dreaded that this may become the callous customary of the public one day.

Being a science teacher, developments in any field are one that I have always welcomed. However, when it comes to the reformation of human genes, I can’t help but think that this is the beginning of the obliteration of what we know as the human race.

Let us be mindful of what is happening in our society. What is not affecting you might be harmful to the next generation, wherein your blood will run through.
