Teachers eventually climb in the leadership ladder because of the needs of the times or simply because of retirement of those occupying positions of authority. However, there are those who assert their authority because of the common belief that those in power can antagonize the rank and file. Leaders become known because of the leadership style they show.
To those aspiring for leadership status, the work HELP must always be in their mind. Simply because, a leader helps; a principal should help; a supervisor must help.
A true leader HELPS.
Have some encouraging comments and observations. Do not be critical in a
negative way. Let your criticism be constructive and done privately.
Encourage risk – taking. A leader pushes the potentials of his people He is not
contented on seeing what can be done but on what should be done even if
with risk.
Listen to suggestion. No one has exclusive knowledge of everything. Reminder
that there are greater ideas when we listen to others.
Provide questions that expand thinking. Don’t settle on the WHO and WHAT of
the matter. Rather, exact the WHY and develop critical thinking among those
you handle. Complacency does not make a good leader.
Support teachers’ efforts. Do not find fault. Rather, extend support to whatever
teachers are doing for the pupils and the school. Even in their personal pursuit,
show your support. This show that you want the best for them and wants them to
progress.
Let us demonstrate a difference in our leadership. Be a true leader. A leader who truly leads; a leader who HELPS.
