Management of the classroom can be the most essential thing a teacher can do for the classroom. When a classroom is managed, it creates an environment in which the students are focused and fosters the classroom’s development. Management of the classroom should begin the moment students enter the classroom. When the classroom is organized, the teacher and the students are on the same page. It is challenging for a teacher to regain control of the classroom once they have lost it. To have a well-managed classroom that is successful, there must be structure, student participation, and the teacher must remain composed and attempt various teaching strategies.
Moreover, structure is the fundamental component of every classroom, and students react positively to it. Not only does it provide students with an enjoyable learning atmosphere, but it also improves their classroom performance. The purpose of classroom structure is to enhance efficiency and learning. A teacher can start by establishing classroom expectations. This can be accomplished by having a clear comprehension of the class norms on the first day of class. Students should be aware of what is permitted and what is not permitted. This can be accomplished by instituting a class routine. The author of Tools For Teaching (2007), Dr. Fred Jones, stated that a classroom routine is merely a rehearsed response to a teacher’s directive. This helps reduce distracting behavior. When there are voids in the routine, tension enters the classroom, and the teacher will spend the majority of his time redirecting students.
In addition, management of a classroom requires student participation. When students are engaged in the classroom, they are more attentive and can excel in their studies. They are capable of handling academic challenges. Student participation captures the student’s attention, thereby eliminating idle time. Obtain student participation by requiring them to collaborate on group assignments. Each student should have a unique responsibility in the classroom so that no one is left out. The task should be straightforward while also making the student feel significant. Assigning simple tasks such as morning roll call or paper distribution. Having students assess each other’s works is an excellent method for engaging students. Student participation is an excellent method for the instructor to receive feedback. It aids in determining who contributes to the classroom and who does not.
Generally, managing classroom behavior involves ensuring that the classroom runs efficiently and effectively. A good classroom management technique will establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning which could enhance academic achievement, and promote social and emotional development and improve academic engagement
