IT has been a long time since our teachers have demeaned themselves by being caregivers and domestic helpers in different parts of the world just to earn higher wages in order for their families to survive. Our education officials blamed this practice for the deterioration of the Philippine education system.
We’ve often heard of the saying, “ that the youth is the hope of the motherland.” But what of the teachers? Even Bill Gates, co- founder of Microsoft, has this to say, “Technology is just a tool. More important in uniting and making the youth to work together are their teachers.”
Hence, the continuing DepEd priority program retrain and develop teachers’ competence that will redound to the delivery of quality education to our students is very, very timely. More than anything else, it focuses on upgrading knowledge and teaching competencies in key subjects such as English, Science and Mathematics.
According to education reports, head teachers and principals were also honed on school leadership and accountability with the end in view of meeting standards for performing schools.
But let us be realistic, more than the training and retraining of teachers, higher wages must be given to teachers to encourage them to stay in the country rather than work as caregivers or domestic helpers abroad.
