Millions of years ago the continental regions of the world were connected with land bridges where men travelled by foot to go from a place to another. Through the passage of time and changes in climate, the great masses of ices melted and water covered these land bridges that separated the human race from each other.
From the ancient world to the new world, man was able to adapt with the changes to preserve himself and survive. This is only one of the many spectrums wherein a student can create in his imagination. Sooner, the curiosity becomes a welcome sign to take interest in learning more about Social Studies (Araling Panlipunan).
It is admissible to say, “that no one can bring back the past.” Literally it is, but it is also true that no one can run from the past as he heads to discover the present and even the future.
One of the common apprehension of learners in delving with Social Studies as school subject is that, it is tedious to memorize the endless list of places, persons, titles, events, dates, beliefs, and cultures. The fear of forgetting makes some of them lose interest to learn more from their lessons.
The learners today are much endowed with the opportunity of the conceptualized learning process for them to appreciate that the subject is not about having to memorize the learning. The progressive educational approach is focused on how the lessons are grasped and retained in their individual perspective.
The program design of the Department of Education (DepED) is for the present generation of learners to gain a deeper understanding and comprehension of the lessons therein. It is in fact the aim of the holistic program which is essential to learning and useful to students and the academic circle where they belong.
There may be no more of the land bridges which used to connect continents that we all know of, but in keeping interest in learning more about Social Studies, mind bridges with the integration of information technology, the world is but small place to dwell in.
In the global community, it is an acceptable norm that we are all worlds apart. But, with the knowledge that can be gained in Social Studies, we have the mind bridges to connect us with the rest of mankind.
