Alternative Learning System or ALS is a program of Department of Education for the Out of School youths and Adults. It is a system of education whereas you undergo a special test called A & E test to finished your level, unlike in the formal system of education were as you undergo a level by level to finished your education. To become more familiar in these system I have here the list of most commonly used terms in ALS. It will serve as a guide to understand more the non-formal system.
- Out of School youth – this term refers to boys and girls ten to seventeen years old who have either stopped schooling or who have not enrolled in any school and therefore have not received the benefits of formal schooling.
- Non – Formal Education – this term refers to any organized, systematic educational activity carried outside the framework of the formal system to provide selected types of learning to a segment of the population.
- Learning Strands – this refers to those learning areas where learning interventions should focused. These learning strands may be compared to the different subjects being taught and used in the formal system.
- Life skills – this term refers to the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable one to deal effectively with the demands, challenges, experiences and situations of everyday life.
- Functional Literacy – this term refers to a range of skills and competencies cognitive, affective and behavioural which enable individuals to ; live and work as human persons, develop their potenrials, make critical and informed decisions, function effectively in the community of life which includes human and non-human context in order to improve the well being of the community life.
- Bureau of Alternative Learning System – refers to the name given to the former bureau of non-formal education under the Department of Education which was mandated to ensure that all learning needs of marginalized learners are addressed.
