The Department of Education is presently adopting the so-called Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) to ensure the learning continuity for school year 2021-2022 as spelled out in DepEd Order No. 12, s. 2020. The adjustments on K-12 curriculum and the utilization of multiple learning modalities are created to further accelerate, broaden, deepen, and sustain the improved education effort at distance learning.

To ensure support for the continuous professional growth of teachers and to address the pressing issues confronting the schools particularly those employing online and blended learning modalities, a Multidisciplinary Webinar in Teaching Mathematics Amidst the Pandemic was held last November 9 -11, 2021, from 8:00-12:00, 1:00-5:00 pm, via Zoom Meeting.

The said activity was initiated by the Education Program Supervisor in Mathematics, Mrs. Leticia E. Eugenio with the support of CID Chief, Dr. Merlinda T. Tablan. This was attended by all Public Elementary, JHS and SHS Mathematics Teachers and selected Private Mathematics Coordinators/Focal Persons of Schools Division Office of Balanga City.

Day 1 of the activity was started with the Opening Program – National Anthem, Prayer, SDO Balanga City March through AVP. Dr. Merlinda T. Tablan, Chief – CID welcomed all the Mathematics Teachers wherein she encouraged them to actively participate in understanding the steps and processes in the development of video lessons. Dr. Ilynne SJ. Samonte, OIC – ASDS and Dr. Nestor P. Nuesca, Regional EPS, gave inspirational messages and acquired relevant technical assistance through their expert inputs. Afterwards, Mrs. Leticia E. Eugenio, EPS-Mathematics, discussed the statement of objectives. She also introduced the speakers/ facilitators in the duration of three – day activities. Also, all the participants informed them to answer the Pre-test through google form.

The first speaker, Dr. Jennifer A. Quiroz, Master Teacher 1 of Cataning Elementary School, started her topic by explaining the usefulness of the budget of work which is based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) for teaching Mathematics. Accordingly, Budget of Work (BOW) was a resource material for teaching multi-grade classes that contained K to 12 basic education curricula; topics for specific skills and competencies; and teaching strategies, activities, and time allotment arranged into columns. Budget of work served as a teacher’s reference in preparing daily and/or weekly home lesson plans so that they could easily design video lessons.

The next two Resource Speakers from Junior High School spoke in the afternoon session, aimed to broaden participants’ knowledge and understanding of developing video lessons using various tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation, Google Meet, zoom, Loom, and Flipgrid. Ms. Judy Ann D. Olmo, Teacher I of City of Balanga National High School, began by conducting a simple poll using the Mentimeter application to gather participants’ various perspectives and ideas about video development tools and their benefits. She did a deeper dive into Flipgrid with the amazing Flipgrid Community team. She let participants explore the platform’s features in creating a quick and easy self-introduction using smartphones and laptops. The Loom screen recorder was then demonstrated, along with how educators can use its pro version to get the most out of it. Mrs. Margarita C. Ramos, Teacher III of Bataan National High School, continued the presentation by discussing how video conferencing tools, such as Zoom and Google Meet, have significantly aided in creating math lesson tools. She also went over some of Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation’ most valuable features. She demonstrated how she used it in her classes, particularly in SPED. Furthermore, all participants went to their assigned breakout rooms for workshops on creating their video lessons. All moderators jumped from one room to the next to answer any questions that arose.

For Day 2 Activity – Started with MOL then followed by the first topic. Department of Education Manual of Style – this was the first topic on the second day led by Mr. Roberto Gabriel Jr., Master Teacher 2 of BNHS Senior Highschool. He talked about the Manual, containing the set of rules of standards, latest language style, format and usage based on the Chicago Manual of Style. The participants were also involved in the DMOS Kahoot Assessment. In addition, Mr. Gabriel explained the important principles for Mathematics like the abbreviations, currencies, dates formatting, language usage, numbers, word class and punctuation. The 2 -hour- session ended full of learning and the teachers were ready for constructing video lessons.

How can I make a video lesson?  Steps in Making Video Lessons? Different applications for my Online/Offline Classes? Questions which were answered on the last day 2 sessions. Mrs. Hilda B. Bugay Master Teacher 2 of Cupang Elementary School handled those topics. She shared the different applications used for making the online class more engaging. Kahoot, Mentimeter, Bamboozle, Quizziz, Online Stopwatch, Whiteboard.fi. These applications were talked about thoroughly which can be used for the integration in making Mathematics Video Lessons. Indeed, those applications can make the videos more fun and engaging to the learners.

The talking point of the three -day webinar was the ways on making Mathematics instructional video lessons. Mrs. Bugay, clearly discussed the Canva, FilmoraGO, Inshot, Tiktok , Whiteboard. These applications really help teachers in making instructional videos.

After the discussion, the participants were asked to have their breakout rooms. Planning for the presentation and applications of any video lessons by grade level were applied during the group work. The day 2 work session was successfully accomplished with the Outputs from the participants.

For Day 3, the assigned team started with the MOL. Then actual presentation and critiquing of lesson plans and video lessons started at exactly 8:00 in the morning. The presenters of video lessons were composed of all Math Teachers from all grade levels. During the showcasing of outputs, it can be noticed that multiple effective strategies in teaching were included at the video lessons. The flow of the demonstration was obviously guided by guidelines/rubrics because the concepts had a clear picture of what the lessons needed to achieve. The contents were consistently organized, meaningful including the curriculum resources. After the presentation of video lessons, Mrs. Eugenio discussed the Ways Forward as part of their additional outputs in developing/creating video lessons from second to fourth quarter. And advised all the participants to answer the post-test through google forms.

Last part of the program was highlighted through giving impressions from the select teachers of elementary, JHS and private school, challenge given by Dr. Merlinda T. Tablan, awarding of certificates of recognition, participation, and best outputs in which the winners are Grade 1 Team – (First Place), Grade 7 (Second Place) and Grade 3 and 6 (Third Place). Commitment and Closing Remarks given by Dr. Flordeliza A. Del Rosario, Chief-SGOD and Mrs. Leticia E. Eugenio, EPS-Mathematics, as they encouraged all teachers to maintain harmonious relationship with their learners even at distance learning and continue developing mathematics video lessons.

This three – day Multidisciplinary Webinar in Teaching Mathematics Amidst the Pandemic was successfully done and accomplished.
