The starting principles of teaching deals with the nature of the child who is to be educated. It is their nature rather than the logical order of the subject matter that should be determined by the nature of teaching. It should aim to ensure the free development of the potentialities with which nature endowed the child.
Teaching methods should evolve around the natural, progressive, and harmonious development of the capacities and whole being of the child. Insight into the child’s nature and sympathy with the child’s life are really essential to efficient and successful teaching.
Teachers and educators have given much attention to the acquisition of subject matter that they tend to think less of the pupil. Education should begin with the proper training and direction of the child’s original tendencies. It is the educators function to provide necessary condition and opportunities by which the innate tendencies can be developed and applied. They should set the teaching learning situations which will be favorable to the child’s growth and development.
The teacher may be ready to teach but with little knowledge of his pupils will have little success. He must have a keen and patient observation among his learners. The teacher becomes a learner and observer for he has to study the minds of the kids, their ways of looking at things, their habits, their strength and difficulties, as well as likes and dislikes. He learns how these things can stimulate, direct and guide the child to growth and development.
