Department Order No.31,s.2012, otherwise known as Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of the Basic Education Curriculum of the k to 12 Program Effective School Year 2012-2013 is now on its third year of roll out. If you will scrutinize the contents of this particular DepEd Order, you will notice that it is stressed in all subject areas that the creative and critical thinking skills of students must be developed, may be because most of these students go through life unaware that they have hidden creative and critical thinking talents.
With the primary aim of making students excel, know themselves, enhance their strengths, lessen if not totally eradicate their weaknesses, the DepEd is doing its best to produce globally competitive students by helping them to discover their potentials through various activities.
Teachers will serve as the primary factor in helping students to develop and nurture their creative talents and higher order thinking skills. To do this, teachers must always inject creativity in whatever lesson that they will have. Teachers must create situations that will make students achieve their goals. It is important to make activities interesting to make students enthusiastic about lessons. Let creativity permeates their whole self, and let critical thinking stir their minds. Students must not be satisfied on being a mediocre, since they can be excellent.
From the words of Maxwell, as cited by Pineda (2012), in nurturing potential leaders, you can be guided by the acronym BEST:
B elieve in them
E ncourage them
S hare with them
T rust them
Nurturing has the ability to transform other people’s lives. When you believe in them, you motivate them and release their creativity and higher order thinking skills. Encouragement makes the people feel better. Motivate them to share their talents. The learners will perform better if they feel that they are trusted.
