Many teachers are doing their best to obtain the Master Teacher position; however, they should first realize the fundamentals, essentials, basic principles, job description and the responsibilities of being a Master Teacher..
Based on my experiences as a Master Teacher 1, and also as cited in the Department of Education (Dep Ed) Order No.29,s.2002, a Master Teacher is a teacher who strives hard to make all his or her students learn. Master Teachers must carry a commitment to the achievement and success of their learners. They are by all means mastered the basics of teaching, likewise, they must excel above and beyond to ensure a positive learning experience for each learner,
A Master Teacher is also expected to share and contribute their skills, talents and knowledge not only to their students but also with their fellow teachers who are novice in their profession. He or she is expected to demonstrate with clarity the expertise and competencies he or she acquired in his or her year of experiences in the field of teaching.
Apart from creating a conducive learning environment, increasing learners’ achievement, and sharing his or her expertise to fellow teachers, it is also a must for a Master Teacher to focus on the existing problems of the students, appropriateness of the school curriculum, current effective techniques and strategies in teaching, the learning styles of students and his or her own teaching styles. Upon analyzing these concerns, he or she must be engaged in doing a study or research on these issues that will meet the students’ needs. It is a must that the problem he or she will study must be timely and certainly will be beneficial to the learners.
I also believe that a Master Teacher must be good in other content areas like Science, History or Social Studies, English, Filipino and other content areas. Consequently, Master Teachers must possess a deep understanding of how students may learn, not ignoring their capabilities and multiple intelligences and skills by being caring, balanced and flexible.
Not also to be forgotten is the Master Teacher’s linkage to the community by involving them to the School Governing Council and other school activities for parents and community people. In addition to these, he or she may continue Post Graduate Courses to enhance professional growth, eventually, he or she may help in improving the school curriculum with the use of creativity and higher order thinking skills.
The responsibilities and job description of a Master Teacher may be taxing and exhausting, but all of these will vanish upon seeing the increased achievement of the learners and the neophyte teachers are learning fast.
