A number of bullying incidents reported in school is quite rampant and alarming nowadays. According to statistics, almost one out of every four students report being bullied during the school year. Yet, there is no definite preventive measure to support anti-bullying work in the school where in fact, bullying inside the school premises is popular among groups of students.
One of the most popular types of bullying often occurs through the use of social electronic gadgets and social media also known as cyberbullying. Conclusive research has shown that the most common types are verbal and social bullying. Moreover, there is also a growing awareness of the problem of bullying, which may lead some to believe that bullying is increasing. However, studies suggest that rates of bullying may be declining. It still remains a prevalent and serious problem in school today.
One real-life case of bullying happened to one of my female students. It occurred when her half-naked photos she used to exchange with a boy in private messaging circulated in group chats. For months, she had endured humiliation among fellow students who belittled her and made vindictive and nasty comments behind her back. She suffered emotional distress that she even had the idea to commit suicide due to depression. This unfortunate incident caused her low self-esteem and it manifested in her poor academic performance due to frequent absences. She also started to withdraw herself from other people thinking that she was always the subject of conversation in group chats and even inside the classroom. This incident opened up my mind that as a teacher, there is a need for me to become aware and to deal responsively the incidents of bullying among students because it can happen to anyone or in any place.
Studies have shown that adults, including parents, can help prevent bullying by keeping the lines of communication open. They should also manage and closely monitor their children’s online activities. Moreover, they should teach them on how to be responsible in using social media and encourage them to get help when they are involved in bullying.
Therefore, it is both the responsibility of the school and the community to raise awareness that any act of bullying is unaccepted and illegal. Students should be encouraged to immediately report to authorities incidents of bullying in the school or community and those who engage in this act because there is the legal implication for their action. Awareness is still the best defense to combat bullying.
