“Look at how a single candle can both defy and define the darkness”

——Anne Frank

The quote above is from a young girl, died at the age fifteen. But just look how she can write words with such wisdom.

That quote perfectly applies to teachers. Often candles are used as a metaphor for what teachers do. Not because they are melting away in the darkness but because they, themselves are the light that kills the darkness.

The darkness can represent a lot of things, it can be evil, wrong decision, misguided paths and most of the time ignorance. Teachers are the light that kills ignorance. Like what Anne Frank said, a candle can defy and define the darkness.

Defy; meaning to go against or fight.

Teachers fight the darkness. They use the strongest among all weapons to slay ignorance; wisdom. The profession’s description is a proof itself. They vowed to be the key to the future generation’s raising.

            Define; to give meaning.

And on the proses, they to define the darkness itself. Enlightening the minds of the young students what is going on around them, the evil the world can be.

They spend hours, days, years to fulfil their vows, expecting nothing in return. Burning themselves out. Melting… shortening… in order to light other small candles in the form of students, molding them.

See how a teacher does so many meaningful things, just like a candle… they light up our way.
