Commentators have noted the importance of parents as the prime educators of their children. Although teachers are the ones who render instructions on a daily basis, parents act as the first teachers in the early years of their children.
As the child fosters growth and development, he is obliged to come to school at the right age. Parents’ responsibilities don’t end up here for they are expected to guide their children. That is why parents should be seen as vital partners in a child’s education.
Establishing successful partnerships between schools and parents is undeniably a key component to increase productivity most especially in the performance of the learners academically. Successful partnerships lead to programs, projects and activities for better learning that will eventually provide the educational needs of the children.
It is really inappropriate to say that everything lies solely on the part of the teachers. We are expected to impart knowledge to our pupils commensurate to their abilities but parents should guide their children particularly in their kindergarten and elementary years.
When parents are involved in school activities, talk regularly with teachers, monitor their child’s progress and help with homework, children will most likely demonstrate better academic achievement.
Involvement in the monitoring and assessment of children’s academic progress demands that all those involved in this inclusive enterprise of educative enrichment need to play an active role. With this, we can say that parents also have a responsibility to become knowledgeable about what constitutes high quality education for their children.
