We, teachers are the surrogate parents of the pupils, although the first foundation of education is at home. Parents should be the first teachers of these children.
Helping the child to learn to love reading is one of the greatest gifts a patent can give to his/her child. Here are some tips for parents;
- Teach your child at home to read. It is better to give rewards rather than punishments, to boost the potential of your child.
- Tutoring can also give your child more confidence in their learning, so they’ll be more likely to read at school and at home.
- Incorporate reading into other activities. Reading exercise is everywhere, regardless of whether there’s a book around. In the car you could play games involving street signs or billboards. In the grocery store, give your child the responsibility of reading the shopping list. And in the kitchen, let your child choose a simple recipe (without using pictures) for dinner one night each week.
- Make a habit of reading: Reading before bed or after school is a great way to introduce regular reading into a child’s routine, especially if you encourage them to read a longer selection that they can look forward to reading over the course of several days. Remember, reading time is meant to be fun as well as educational. Allow him to learn and develop at his own pace. If possible submit him for a reading test to assess his reading level.
Parent also play a vital role in order for the children learn how to read. They should be careful in selecting books or materials for reading.
