It has been observed that the best teachers have well controlled classes but appear to do little directly to make their pupils obedient. They rarely shout and the pupils appear to know what is expected of them. They neither terrorize nor criticize their class. This is what we call passive discipline. Having positive relationships built on expectations and clearly set out classroom rules.
Imposing passive discipline is a skill that is gained by experience. Trying to always appear confident even if it is not true and being direct and making sure that you direct the pupils to do what you want are tested techniques to enforce discipline.
Aside from the cited tips, giving clear instructions and involving them to formulate rules are sound investments to spend the moment you meet them. Then on a daily basis, insist on good standards of manners and language.
There may be times wherein everyone needs to shout at some point, but we should try to save the shouting for when we really need it, otherwise, pupils will just ignore us. More so, we should try to avoid public criticisms of notorious misdemeanors as we will improve their reputation.
Passive discipline indeed is a way of dealing with the pupils in a compassionate manner. A mode wherein the teacher is not harsh, yet she is able to handle the class very well.
