It has been often said that schooling is efficient when learning is permanent and meaningful to our learners. I agree with this! But the big question is, “How will one know if permanent and meaningful learning take place?
Well, based on my experiences as a teacher, teaching per se must take cognizance of the basic principles of learning.
Teacher’s activities should be arranged to fit into the level of understanding of her students. She too must be adept to her lesson , in order to develop the knowledge , skills and attitude to the learners .Likewise the teacher must be keen in making significant connections of the lesson to the lives of the learners , teach them how to solve problems and decide wisely . All of these are vital for them to develop their lifelong learning skills.
As it has been constantly claimed, “The teacher is the best motivating factor inside the classroom.” He / she must be loaded with knowledge , be creative and resourceful enough and must always have time to research to provide what the learners need to be one of the nation builders.
Thus, it is very vital that teachers must provide more individual/group activities that enhance students’ critical and creative thinking skills . Classroom activities are rich breeding grounds to challenge, train and improve the reasoning power of our 21st century learners.
21st century learners + 21st century teachers working hand in hand is tantamount to permanent and meaningful learning!
