K-12 Curriculum and its introduction the Philippines got lots of issues and unavoidable controversies. Like any other afresh led things, K-12 ingress to the education department will never be in laidback form, it would always have its drawbacks and flaws, aside from its explained well benefits.
Adjustment for teachers and students to achieve the success in K-12 curriculum is tough and rigid yet possible and achievable. The first steps are always the hardest but the ones who will determine the triumph of a venture.
K-12 curriculum means additional two years of schooling, two years of additional financial burden and two additional years of stressful waiting. However K-12’s additional two years in its senior years provide the students the ability to work and find job after high school. The two additional years enables students to learn vocational-technical education that could be their weapon for employment just in case they won’t enter college. The additional two years in school also entitles the learners to compete, contend and strive globally.
K-12 embraces the mother tongue approach, the purpose is to make the students feel comfortable with the language and be able to participate with the discussion easily and learn the lessons well. Nevertheless, some teachers weren’t be able to translate some educational terms properly especially in Mathematics and Science earning them hardships presenting the lesson.
Spiral progression for secondary level is also introduced by K-12, meaning to say, secondary high school students will learn a little bit of everything per year. For instance, in their first year, they would discussed different science concepts; a little bit of general science, a bit of biology, a bit of chemistry and a bit of physics all in one roller coaster year which may cause information overload or overkill with students and a lot adjustments from teachers.
To wrap this up, K-12 curriculum has its advantages and nuisances, which is considered normal to all things in this subsistence. K-12 in order to become triumphant should be coupled with readiness from the higher ups of the education department, form financial to human resources; gallant and noble adjustments from educators, and genuine acceptance from students and their parents. In the end, it is the students, the hope of our nation which will benefit mostly from this change brought about by the need for educational development, maturity and expansion.
