Project, as applied to teaching had its origin in the activities like home economics and agriculture. But nowadays, in modern teaching, project is well-defined in every learning area in every grading period. The project, a hands-on activity is a method of learning through experiencing. It emphasizes purposeful activities carried on a life- like situation.
In using the project method of teaching, salient points must be taken into considerations.
- It must have an educational value which can be appreciated by the pupil. The pupils’ interest and needs should be taken into consideration. To be of interest, the mental level and maturity of the pupil is to be adapted.
- It should be carried out in its natural setting or in given life-like situation. The approach must be practical or functional
- It must follow the principles of creativity and cooperation. Creativity promotes growth while cooperation develops personal and social relationships among peers. Creativity and cooperative factors encourage initiative, originality, experimentation and cooperation.
- It must be used according to the needs of the course. It is not adaptable to all units in the course of study, however, with the teachers imaginative mind, it can be used and applied successfully.
- If it involves construction or experimentation, availability of materials must be considered and the cost of materials as well. The scarcity and high cost of the material needed causes ineffectivity of worthwhile projects.
- It must be governed by a time schedule. The economy of time must meet the nature of the project.
