After several years of classroom observing, interacting, and supervising, the school principal would certainly scout a potential school manager in the future among his/her subordinates.
He/she certainly knows a good school manager takes the initiative to prepare, train and grooms a classroom teacher to be a future school administrator, or else nobody will replace them when the time comes that they will retire and somebody must take over.
Some of the qualities that a teacher must possess to be considered a potential school administrator are the following according to Magbuhat (2007).
- Passion – this quality in a teacher heart is unanimously preferred by the school principal. A classroom teacher who evidently possess, this quality has the edge over the completion. A passionate teacher is not averse to learning and exploring new things that he/she can offer to his/her students. He/she strives hard to keep abreast of new ideas and teaching techniques that will contribute to greater learning. The teacher exhibits enthusiasm and offers him/herself as a model of tireless and eager learner- a passionate teacher does not fear change. Rather, he/she welcome changes as a challenge to meet head-on.
- Strong Interpersonal Skills
According to Coney, States that any job “is twenty per cent knowledge and eighty per cent interpersonal skills.” The ability to connect with the students is one of the traits required of a teacher. A good teacher should not only encourage learning. More importantly, he/she should inspire it.
- Decision-making – it is not only the school principal that should be good in decision-making. There are also situation that calls for decision-making for teachers. This is evident in the observation of a school principal.
- Organizing – a teacher who has been observed as an organized individual has the potential to be groomed as school manager. From the class schedule, different school forms, different activities and all other paraphernalia that obviously shows organization skills.
- Communication – this skill is the process of conveying, transmitting, opinions, ideas to other co-workers and the school principal. A teacher who may be considered as potential to be a school manager is good in communicating.
To be a school manager is a great challenge for teachers at present because of various concerns and challenges in the education sector. But, though the positive attitude coupled with positive qualities, there will be no reasons so that they will be promoted in the near future.
