Knowing the conditions, social classes, and living status of the learners is also important to consider when aiming for quality learning. In the Philippines, we cannot deny the fact that millions of poor learners are trying to survive and keep competing to become globally competitive despite the changes and challenges of this modern world.
Moreover, most of these poor learners do not even have the basic necessities for a decent life, especially the ability to provide for their needs to use and have efficient and effective learning experiences. The collaboration of different stakeholders is greatly anticipated to help and reach these learners. As a matter of fact, many of them have initiated different programs to help solve the problems and challenges brought by the pandemic. Many teachers make significant sacrifices and work tirelessly to ensure that students receive the education they deserve. And they are very much aware that there are still many poor learners who are struggling because of a lack of school supplies and the unavailability of gadgets.
Similarly, in addition to the assistance provided by the national and local levels, teachers must possess the qualities necessary to assist in the transformation of the poor and poorest learners into becoming globally competitive. Compassion is essential while dealing with learners that are poor. However, if you don’t hold them to high standards, you’re doing them a disservice. We want our learners to pursue their best in class and in life, and as teachers, we want them to succeed. Holding learners to high standards encourages them to work toward attainable goals that provide intrinsic motivation.
Also, many times, learners’ experiences are constrained by their financial resources and the experiences of their families. Showing to the learners the world around them and opening their eyes to what the world has to offer is critical.
In addition, when it comes to creating a healthy learning environment, building relationships is crucial. Be a reliable source of information. Make your learners and their families feel welcome by demonstrating that they can trust you.
Likewise, poor learners may find it difficult to concentrate in class due to issues in their daily lives. It’s critical to instill strong social and emotional skills in children that foster trust, respect, community, and personal development.
Lastly, it’s critical to have a classroom that radiates optimism and compassion. Make sure your learners understand the importance of being caring and polite to one another. Team-building exercises, demonstrating kindness, mutual respect, and emphasizing the value of welcoming others are all excellent strategies to achieve this in your classroom.
