“Reading makes a wiser man.” A passage rich in meaning. A wiser man depicts an individual who is adequately informed, actively engaged in selected wholesome activities in all aspect of living that will bring forth individual and social satisfaction. Such condition conveys that reading is basic in fostering the right growth and development of an individual in relation to his society. Considering the complexity of living in a modern society, there must be an instrument that will lead us to the effective continuity of a full life. This instrument is reading.
Reading, therefore, is the most fundamental part of learning. It opens the door to a numerous opportunities for growth and development. History, cultures and civilization can be explored in tons and volumes of printed materials. A glimpse of the past is made possible through reading a variety of printed materials.
How then can a learner understand what is happening in the classroom and his environment if he/she does not know how to read, and much more if he cannot understand what he reads? How can one follow instructions and direction if he cannot read? Well, the most effective way to help learners may be the simplest one. Teach everyone to read, to love reading.
Let us therefore encourage our learners to develop passion for reading. Let us help our learners to become “fast readers who can comprehend better.”
