Filipinos are known to be competitive in the global community. While this may be true, our present education system hinders us in turning more viable among other countries.
In view of this, the Department of Education (DepEd) has been enhanced from the 10 – year of basic education into 12 – year through the program called the K to 12 Education Plan in the country since the DepEd started this two years ago.
The implementation of the K to 12 in the Basic Education Curriculum is the key to our nation’s development. Although the government is now facing problems in implementing the program, I believe that there should be a need to employ it for the quality of the instruction is very imperative and decisive.
According to Isagani Cruz (2010) in one of his columns in a local newspaper, he pointed out the following reasons why we should support K to 12 basic education program in the Philippine basic education curriculum. Initially, students are able to get sufficient instructional time to do subject – related tasks which become them more prepared in various subjects.
Likewise, the graduates of this program are well – trained to enter labor force. Our high school graduates are employable for they are competent well – equipped with the skills needed in the workplaces. They can choose a field that they are interested in. As a result, they are endowed with the skills needed without a college degree and added up to the nation’s manpower.
Finally, with this program, Filipino graduates are automatically recognized as professional abroad for it follows the international education standard as practiced by all nations. There is no need to spend money in order to qualify to their standards. Filipinos going abroad are able to help to their families more in our country by buying property and creating businesses.
In a nut shell, the K to 12 education plan offers a greater solution to those problems. However, there seems to be problems arising while implementing the program. These problems include lack of government budget, shortages of classrooms and teachers and limited instructional materials and supplies. This is very beneficial to all of us if we focus on the long – term effect of K to 12. We must have the encouragement and support for the betterment of our educational system and for the growth of county’s economy. Let us always remember that if we want to change in our society, we must start in education. It is also an endeavor worth pursuing if we truly intend to improve the Philippine educational system. By investing more time and resources in our education, we can expect our graduates to become competitive in the global business arena, and bring more success that would contribute towards building our nation.
