“He who speaks English owns half of the world.”

                This quotation implies that we can do many things, expand our horizons and achieve greater heights if we learn this language.

English is used as an international language which connects people around the world. It is the means of communication between countries. It is the medium of global communication.

                If we want to be globally competitive, we have to take English seriously. Listed below are some of the reasons why we shouldn’t take English for granted.

1. It is the language of science and technology. The terminologies and processes in this field are stated in the English language.
2. This language is used in the field of medicine. Doctors, nurses, medical technologists and other medical staff use English not just abroad but also here in our country. Medical books are published using the English language. Medicine and prescription also uses English language.
3. Business and advertising benefit in the use of English. Businessmen use this language in dealing with other businessmen. Advertising industries grow because of English. Most advertisements use English because this language can be understood by many.
4. English is used in Engineering and Architecture. Engineers and architects use English when they plan, build, and do their work. The terminologies used in the field are also written in the English language.
5. English is the main language used in the worldwide web. We can chat with our relatives and friends in other countries using the web. We can download varied information from the internet with just a click of the button. We can see other people in other places, transact business, do banking, buy and sell items using the net but this won’t be possible if we don’t understand what the computer tells us and this machine uses English as a medium. Therefore, English is a necessity in using the internet.

Because of the reasons mentioned above, we should take English seriously. Everybody should master the skills required in English because these skills – listening, speaking, reading, writing, and viewing will help us in our day to day activities in dealing and interacting with other people and most of all in connecting with the world.
