Education nowadays is pupils or learners centered. All plans, programs and projects must and should always be intended for the benefit of our pupils. Their aptitude, interests, skills, talents, culture, health conditions, strengths and weaknesses must be properly addressed and be given focus in the planning of our daily lessons and activities. Perhaps due to a lot of things to be given considerations, we, teachers, sometimes forgot to give attention to our pupils’ social development.

I think it’s high time to administer and prepare our SOCIOMETRIC and SOCIOGRAM.  Having this will help us know more about our pupils, and will also guide us in determining who among them have some social problems, and therefore be given chance to correct and improve their social behaviors as early as possible.

To be able to help determine who among our pupils have some social problems, I prepared a sample checklist that each of our pupils must answer honestly. We, teachers play one of the most vital roles in developing our children as socially independent, yet responsible and generous individuals. They can start developing these positive traits as they start having friends and being good friends of their classmates and of other pupils in the school and in their community. Let’s find out who needs our help, and be their FIRST “REAL GOOD FRIEND”.

Answer the checklist honestly, and find out if you are a REAL GOOD FRIEND or NOT.

Being a good friend is not just about having a good time with others, it’s also about how willing you are to put your friends first or point out when they’re doing something you don’t agree with. Have a read through the following checklist and see how good a friend you really are.

Questions About Being a  GOOD FRIEND

NO

YES

Remarks

1.  Are you a good listener? Part of being a good friend is about being willing to listen rather than just talk. This takes time and effort but if you can make time just to listen to others and respect what they have to say, then it’s a sign of being a good friend.

2.  Are you approachable? Do you answer queries of your classmates and friends politely even if you’re busy at times? Do you help them when some lessons or activities are too difficult for them to be done alone?

3.  Are you trustworthy? If a friend tells you something personal are you good at keeping it in confidence, or do you go and tell everyone when opportunity comes, or when you got angry and disappointed of her or him?

4.  Do you avoid gossiping about others? This is one of the biggest signs of a good friend and really does stand out. Do you avoid speaking badly about others or spreading rumors in order to hurt them? Do you defend friends when you hear others gossiping about them? If you avoid gossiping others will notice how different you are and soon realize what a truly good friend you are.

5.  Are you selfless rather than selfish? Do you put your friends’ needs above your own? Do you try to find a compromise if you can’t agree with a friend? Are you willing to do something your friend wants to do for a change rather than forcing them to do what you want? If you are willing to put your friends first in most things then this is a sign of a good friend.

6.  Can you sensitively tell a friend what you really think? Good friends don’t just go with the flow, sometimes they have to be honest and tell someone what they really think. Sometimes your friends might want to do something that is morally wrong or illegal or just plain unfair on another person. Are you able to tell your friend honestly what you think about it, without just going along with it? The sign of a good friendship is when you can be totally honest with the other person, without them being offended because they know you have their best interests at heart.

TOTAL

If you got 6 YES, then you’re such a REAL GOOD FRIEND. If you got 5 YES, then you could become one of the BESTFRIENDS. If you got 4 YES, then you’ll soon one of the NICE FRIENDS. If you got 3 YES, then you’ll probably one of the FRIEND FINDERS. If you got 2 YES and below, then you have to find out how you will develop some of the nice characteristics a friend should have. Remember, Good friendship counts! What should you do now?
