What will the educational system do to end learning poverty? How does a teacher, for that matter, work out their way up towards a destination of successful objectives? Tough right? At this point, everyone needs to unleash the power of patience, responsiveness, and reliability. For Science teachers, here it goes…
Learning poverty according to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian is defined as the percentage of children aged 10 who cannot read or understand a simple story. The massive academic program seems to worsen and is already dismal as of writing. At that stage, each teacher is encouraged to relive their passion and love for teaching in order to devise strategic ways to cover the country’s learning poverty. In the Science academe, it’s tougher. Not only that the language was tackled in English form but also the fact that learning must be assisted with the hands-on realization of facts through the assistance of a laboratory management system. It goes hand in hand with the teaching and learning process to push through. To identify and cater to the deficiencies in learning, first, teachers must innovate. Innovation involves new ideas and is crucial in the integration process in order to attain success. This involves strategies, lesson planning, program coordination, professional development, and the learning environment itself. These factors coincide and are factors bound as one. Strategies involve the determent of learning solutions. Outcomes will provide the necessary riposte to the problems. Lesson planning on the other hand bears the map for effective learning. Teachers will be guided accordingly in the course instruction that covers the need of the learners. Program coordination designs and oversees what the school needs. It capacitates the administration with answers as back up to the needs of the Science curricula. From the laboratory materials to acquired research appending the conclusion of results, it is a must that the avenue of learning trudges the path in accordance with this. Professional development was included as teachers must always be equipped with the necessary skills in order to expand their knowledge. As this world is always changing, so as the students, it is imperative to always be adept with the current trends in both technology and education per se. Lastly, the development of the learning environment. For better learning outcomes, classrooms and the school system must be associated with the trend of students in this modern world. Gone were the days when technology was not a factor in learning and a simple four-walled classroom makes up the whole learning agenda. Integration of the mentioned factors in the teaching field especially in Science will not be all the remedy but will surely not hem in the innovation process in education that this country is facing now.
This year, Vice President and DepEd Secretary Sara Duterte presented the Basic Education Report 2023 with a tagline, MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa. By engaging with a relevant curriculum, being a responsible teacher, and providing quality education services, this tagline was enthusiastically achievable. The only question left for Science teachers and the other teachers in the educational system was, are you ready? Hope everyone echoed a YES answer!
