Senior High School is the last two years to complete the K-12 Program and the last leg of the Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum. It is composed seven learning areas and three tracks, namely Academic, Technical Vocational-Livelihood, and Sports and Arts. After completing Junior High School, each student must choose one among these tracks which he/she will pursue in Senior High School.
Senior High School will provide students relevant exposure and actual experience in their chosen track. In this level, students will have the opportunity to be trained by skilled and competent trainers and instructors who specialized on the different tracks. Upon the completion of this level, all students are considered and expected to be ready for employment in certain jobs. This feature is one of the highlights of Senior High School—to provide every Filipino student the necessary readiness for the world of work.
“In SY 2012-2013, there are 33 public high schools, public technical-vocational high schools, and higher education institutions (HEIs) that have implemented Grade 11. This is a Research and Design (R&D) program to simulate different aspects of Senior High School in preparation for full nationwide implementation in SY 2016-2017. Modeling programs offered by these schools are based on students’ interests, community needs, and their respective capacities.” (Official Gazette, www.gov.ph)
Being one of the major features of the K-12 program, Senior High School has not been spared from the scrutiny of the public especially of those belonging to the education sector. Nevertheless, with Dep Ed’s persistence, the Philippine educational system is now just down to one more school year before Senior high School completely sails off.
