There are a lot of abbreviations and acronyms used in Alternative Learning System. It is important for us, especially for the newly designated District ALS Coordinator, Instructional Manager and Mobile teacher to become familiar with the different terms used in the System it is important to become more use in it to deliver the programs of the Department. The terms in this article can be benefited by ALS Facilitator and Stakeholders in delivering the programs and Projects of the Bureau.
ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM– refers to a viable alternative system of learning parallel to the existing formal basic educational system. It encompasses both the non formal and informal sources of knowledge and skills.
BASIC EDUCATION – this term refers to the education intended to meet basic learning needs, which lay the foundation on which subsequent learning can be based. It encompasses early childhood, elementary and high school education as well as alternative learning systems for children, out of school youths and adults learners as well as those with special needs.
BUREAU OF ALTERNATIVE LEARNING SYSTEM – this term refers to the name given to the former Bureau of Non-Formal Education under the Department of Education which was mandated to ensure that all learning needs of marginalized learners are addressed.
COMPETENCIES – refers to the sustainable, sufficient and essential skills that should be acquired by learners to be functionally literate.
CORE CURRICULUM – this refers to a collection of the most essential and most frequently used skills and competencies a learner should acquire and possess to be functionally literate.
INDIGENOUS LEARNING SYSTEM – this term refers to the internally generated or self-designed cultural and education response to pressures from the native cultural heritage or form diffusions or impositions from the outside as people find ways to meet their felt needs.
LEARNING STRANDS – this refers to those learning areas where learning interventions should focused. These learning strands may be compared to the different subjects being taught ad used in the formal system.
