Teachers are playing major role in developing a quality world to live by for students. In general, teachers have many essential qualities that are needed by the children to be able to achieve the knowledge and skills imparted to them, until such a time that they reach the level of almost perfection.
Considering this, they must be also aware, that there are things that they must not employ in their classroom management. Basedfrom the tips written by Melissa Kelly for About.Com.the following are the things that a teacher must not do in her classroom management.
Playing favorites. Teachers must observe the highest level of fairness. They must not ever play favorites. Students no matter how young, will know if you are fair with your rules. If your best students did something wrong, they too should get punished for it.
Inconsistence in discipline. Some students assess their teacher by observing silently and find out to what extent they will be allowed to get away with. Establish discipline techniques, to prevent students of thinking that you allow a lot of disruptions in your class.
Allowing too much interruption.Do not let minor interruptions ruin the momentum of the entire class. Instead find creative ways of bringing order to the class without stopping the flow of the lesson ( a good technique is to ask a question to one of those who took part in the disruption).
Confrontation in front of students. Although some students may learn from the examplesyou set with a particular disciplinary issue, it is best to avoid dealing with discipline issues in front of the class since this may cause the problem student to “lose face” in front of his/her friends.. As such, you may lose all chances of teaching that one child anything in your class. Talk with him in private. Stop disruptions with a little humor. A good laugh can get things back on track. However, be careful with making a distinction between good humor and harmful sarcasm.
Showing of low expectations in class. Send a message of high expectations in your class instead of showing disinterest on them. Show them that you expect a lot from them in your class not by intimidation, but by acknowledging their potentials to contribute to class discussions.
Making and giving rules that are not understandable. Students can only appreciate your rules if they are given the chance to understand these rules and the consequences for breaking them.
Treating students based on previous disciplinary problems done. Start fresh every day. Never treat students based on previous infractions. Start the day treating each child with objectivity and open –mindedness that they are there to learn and contribute to the discussion.
Teachers will be producing students who have self-respect and self-esteem if they are treated positively by their teachers during their younger years by way of pondering these tips for a good classroom management.
