Writing is seen everywhere we go. In the class of kindergarten where pupils are taught how to write their names and soon they are asked to write a letter, a short paragraph, a story, a composition and so on. Letting a child to write could be the most difficult part of teaching composition because very few of them can express themselves. Teaching the pupils to write needs a lot of patience especially in guiding them just so they can write even the simplest composition. Every child is a writer. Through the guidance , encouragement, children can develop into writers. With a little coaching coming from a teacher, a child’s writing ability can be enhanced and can be brought to fulfilment. Here are some tips on how to encourage a child to write.
- Let the child talk about something he likes.
When the child is asked on the things he likes ,he can easily gives his ideas because he is very eager to share his thoughts. With these ideas you can help him put together these ideas into writing. Teachers are just there to guide him in writing .Most of the ideas should come from the child and the teacher will just serve as a mentor.
- Encourage the child to read.
Pushing a child to read will widen his vocabulary. Remember that he cannot write well if his vocabulary is so little. He can get some ideas to the writer of the books he reads .Reading different kinds of books will help the child to explore his ideas more.
- Encourage journaling.
Journaling helps a child to record daily activities he does everyday of his life. It helps him process his deep thoughts and emotions. Mostly it serves as a self-therapy for the frustrations you had .
- Join in a writing contest.
Let the child exercise his writings by joining in a writing contest. This will enhance his ability to write and somehow boost his confidence to compete with others. Entering his best work in writing will encourage them to write more.
