One of the multiple intelligences according to W. Gardner is the spatial intelligence. This type of intelligence includes the special ability of learners to excel in dance, sports and bodily kinestethics.

The Department of Education ( DepED) recognizes this type of intelligence. Thus, the Special Program in Sports was conceptualized. Its main objective is to hone the talents of students who showcase their intellectual prowess thru sports.

Every learner is unique. This is one of the principles of Education that give importance to individual learning styles and innate tendencies.

Selected secondary schools all over the Philippines were given permission to implement the Special Program in Sports (SPS). This specialized program for students who have special talents indifferent types of sports is similar in many aspects with other programs like the Special Science Curriculum (SSC) or the Special Program in the Arts ( SPA).

Like the other special programs, for a school to be allowed to offer the SPS, must have the physical facilities to host individual and group sports. Teacher specialists should be available in school. These are teachers who have mastery of one or more sports. They should have the winning history in one particular sports at least in the Palarong Pampook.

Equipment is another factor to consider before offering SPS. The school must be ready enough for the training materials of the students because the learners will spend at least two (2) hours of training for their chosen field of interest.

And of course, the students. An inventory of Elementary students with special skills in sports must be conducted to ensure that the school will have clientele for SPS.

A nation’s progress cannot be measured only by the sky scrapers or other infra projects but the kind of citizenry it possess. Countries that excel in Olympics are those countries that value sports.
