It is natural for Filipinos to post on social media the things that make them happy such as new food, place to visit, gadgets, feelings like being in-love, broken hearted, achievements and so on. But it seems that we have no longer a limit on sharing what would have been supposedly is celebrated privately and talked about with close friends and family who truly sympathize with us in everything that happens in our lives.
That is why on August 15, 2012, former President Benigno S. Aquino III signed Republic Act 10173 or known as the “Data Privacy Act of 2012” which aims to protect the private communication of individuals as well as the public and private sectors of the communication system.
But it seems that this law is not yet fully recognized especially by parents who continue to post their children’s School Card whenever it achieves school recognition.
It is really nice to be proud and let the world know the excellence of the students but this document contains important and sensitive personal information that can be used to harm and victimize the students, teachers, principals as well as the person who posted it and his relatives.
A student’s School Card contains his or her full name and LRN (Learner Reference Number) unique to him or her where there are its historical records that can be used in Identity Theft. It will also feature the signature of the principal and school administrators as well as the school logo which can be easily copied for extortion.
While it is nice to share honor with other people we should also keep in mind that it can be disastrous. So always consider the safety of young people and stay private to the modern public.
