School year 2020-2021 is one of the most challenging in the education system. Due to COVID-19, the Department of Education provide different distant learning modalities like the modular distance learning, online distance learning and blended learning to make everyone safe.

The Department of Education recommends academic ease measure to help teachers and learners who are still adapting to the distance learning set-up.

One of the academic ease measure implemented is the Subject Integration. Subject Integration is the practice of weaving content from one of the subject areas to the other. In Araling Panlipunan for example, subjects like Filipino, Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (ESP), Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), and Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPEH) are Allied Subjects. These are the subjects that can be integrated in the performance output of the learners.

By applying their learning from one subject to another, the students begin to see its relevance. For instance in one of the performance output in Araling Panlipunan 10 which state “Bumuo ng isang slogan tungkol sa pagmamalasakit at tamang pangangalaga ng likas na yaman ng Pilipinas” the competencies of AP, Filipino, MAPEH and ESP are integrated. The learners will only do one (1) performance output that he will submit to the four (4) subjects, and will show that learning is interconnected not only to the integrated subjects but especially to the real world.

By integrating allied subjects, teachers guide their students in transferring their skills. They also have more time to plan and integrate their lessons. Students on the other hand, can develop their talents, skills and critical thinking while having more time with their family and important matters to do at home.
