Motivation is a theoretical construct, used to explain behavior. Motives are hypothetical constructs, used to explain why people do what they do, for example, when they use some strategy to achieve a goal. According to Maehr and Meyer, “Motivation is a word that is part of the popular culture as few other psychological concepts are”.
Motivation plays a significant role in the rate and success of learning process, and in science subject in particular. Motivation “provides the primary impetus to initiate learning and later the driving force to sustain the long and often tedious learning process” (Dörnyei, 1998, p. 117). Motivation, however, is “a complex” and “multifaceted construct” (Gardner, 1985; Williams & Burdoen, 1997). It consists of such factors as the attached value of a task, the rate of success expected by learners, whether learners believe they are competent enough to succeed, and what they think to be the reason for their success or failure at the task (Dörnyei & Ushioda, 2011).
A role model is a person who inspires and encourages us to strive for greatness, live to our fullest potential and see the best in ourselves. A role model is someone we admire and someone we aspire to be like. We learn through them, through their commitment to excellence and through their ability to make us realize our own personal growth. We look to them for advice and guidance.
A role model can be anybody: a parent, a sibling, a friend — but some of our most influential and life-changing role models are teachers. “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” — Marlene Canter, My Teacher My Hero
The teacher as a role model could be a factor to motivate students stay in school and facilitate learning. If the students feel the love, care and understanding of their respective teacher there would be no reason for the students to escape their classes. Everyone will enjoy the learning process, as the teacher itself serves as the motivation for them. Since these students stays in school for almost five (5) to six (6) hours a day, 5 days in a week, this could be their second home, family extension. The teacher could really inspire students not to stop gaining knowledge.
